It found 31 percent of electric vehicles (EVs) had a problem in their first four years - compared with 19 percent of petrol cars and 29 percent of diesels. And faulty EVs spent an average of five days off the road compared with three and four days for petrol and diesels.
The most common EV faults were software problems.
The poll by consumer group Which? casts doubt on the idea EVs are more reliable than traditionally fuelled cars.
UK sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2030.
Figures show EVs accounted for more than one in six new cars registered here last year.
Lisa Barber from WHICH? said it is "vital" drivers get a "quality product". She added that there is a "significant opportunity for manufacturers to up their game".
