November 30 (Renewables Now) - Nexans SA (EPA:NEX) has won a frame contract worth over EUR 650 million (USD 733.9m) to supply a high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) subsea interconnector cable for grid operator Terna SpA as part of the latter's Tyrrhenian Link project in Italy, a press release showed on Tuesday.

The French offshore cable company will manufacture and install 500 kilometres of a 500-kV mass-impregnated (MI) cable and fibre optic cable at a water depth of over 2,000 metres between Sardinia and Sicily.

The project allows for the first loop to be established between the two islands and the Italian mainland. The transmission link will help grow electricity exchange capacity and support the development of renewable energy flows.

For the installation, Nexans plans to use its recently-launched cable-laying vessel Nexans Aurora, which can operate in water depth of over 2,000 metres and supports a 10,000-tonne cable payload.

The French company added that more projects in the region are expected to be announced as it seeks to play a major role in improving grid infrastructure across the Mediterranean.
