Offshore wind service provider Seaway 7 will soon start early engineering and installation works on inter-array grid cables for the Moray West offshore wind farm off the Scottish coast.
Seaway 7 signed a letter of award with Moray Offshore Windfarm Ltd last Monday (8 August).
The Moray West offshore wind farm development is located on the East coast of Scotland in the Moray Firth, approximately 22.5km from the Caithness coastline. It will be the Moray Firth’s third offshore wind farm after Moray East and Beatrice.
The new development will be comprised of 60 wind turbine generators with an installed capacity of 882MW.
Seaway 7’s scope is under final negotiation but will encompass engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning (EPIC) for the inter-array cables.
As part of this, it may be expected to supply and install approximately 125km of 66kV subsea power cables and respective cable protection systems.
The company will use vessels from its cable lay fleet which will start work on the project in 2024. Execution of the scope will be led from Seaway 7’s Aberdeen office.
The wind farm will connect to the National Grid at Blackhillock substation, as well as a new substation at Whitehillock to step up voltage.
The total underground export cable corridor route will be 96km long, out of which 65km will be offshore. Up to 275km of inter array cables will be laid to connect the turbines.
The final geotechnical survey campaign to inform detailed design of the wind turbine and offshore substation foundations was completed in March of last year.
In addition, the Moray West project recently obtained a contract for difference (CfD) as part of the UK Government’s latest CfD allocation round. The wind farm and marine export cable were granted construction consent in 2019.
The project is expected to reach financial close in the coming months, with first power expected in 2024.
